On Thursday, May 19th, John Day, professor of Computer Science of Boston University Metropolitan College will give a guest lecture at UPC. Mr. Day has been involved in research and development of computer networks since 1970 (his original network address was 12) taking part in the design of transport and upper layer protocols for the ARPANet as well as the Internet. He was in charge of the development of the OSI Reference Model, Naming and Addressing and a major contributor to the upper layer architecture and was a member of the Internet Research Task Force’s Name Space Research Group. Recently he has been turning his attention to a new network architecture that scales indefinitely, RINA, described in his book Patterns in Network Architecture: A return to fundamentals.
Professor Day’s talk will focus on the challenges faced in the current Internet architecture and their origins, basic networking principles, an introduction to RINA (Recursive InterNetwork Architecture), as well as a presentation of the features of RINA and its implications. Topics discussed will include Future Internet, naming, addressing, multi-homing, mobility and security.
Questions & Answers and a roundtable discussion will follow with participants Josep Paradells (professor of UPC), Marcelo Yanuzzi (professor of UPC), Josep Maria Selga (professor of URL-La Salle).
